Rick Rose of Hawaii (1927 - 2000)

The late Capt. Edward 'Rick' Rose 1927 to 2000, born in Richmond, California, became one of Hawaii's lure making greats and most respected game fishermen.

Rick's first charter boat was on the island of Oahu in the 1950s. At the same time, Rick experimented with his lure designs, achieving outstanding success. Then in the '50s, Rick moved to Maui, where he captained the Judy Ann before in 1978, taking his charter fishing career to the Big Island.
Rose, still making his custom lures through the '70s and '80s, hand-crafted in homemade molds, then turned and polished in his garage, mainly for friends or local captains. It was the era of lure making. Makers like Joe Yee, Steve Coggin, Henry Chee, Chester Kaita and Johnny Abreu, each gaining reputations for their craft. Some like Joe Yee and Steve Coggin are still making their lures today. Rick's success led him to hold numerous fishing accolades. Amongst them was a monster blue that went 1711 pounds, two fish on display in the Smithsonian museum, and two caught and recorded fish species previously thought to be extinct.

An online news article from the Honolulu Advertiser, dated Feb 5th 1967, reads. Lahaina skipper Rick Rose hit a hot spot off north Lanai Saturday on Judy Ann, picking up five ono on a morning half-day charter. Weights ran 55, 48, 40, 32 and 22 pounds, back in the same area in the afternoon, he added a 47-pounder and a rare Kagami Ulua.

Rick Rose of Hawaii long-lost plungers
Blue Ocean Lures have been extremely fortunate to locate several unfished Rick Rose plungers hidden away in a box on the Big Island of Hawaii. These stunning masterpieces date back more than a quarter-century to the late '80s or early '90s. As such, each head has undergone a detailed polishing process to remove the build-up of age and bring back the original lustre of the resin once formed by Rick. The opportunity to restore and skirt such classics has been an absolute privilege. As such, each head has been thoughtfully paired with a selection of the highest quality Japanese Yo Zuri skirts, a manufacturer that has also been around for more than 40 years, and the same make, used back in the day.

Rick Rose lures in pristine condition are extremely rare. With only one of each size and colour, know that you will be fishing, the only Rick Rose plunger paired with these Yo Zuri skirts, in New Zealand and possibly the world!
