Coggin lures

"I first started making the Tado during the late '70s and early '80s at a time when most guys were making smaller lures. I gave one to Chip Van Mols a deckhand on Jen Ken Po with Capt. Jerome Judd and they caught a 700-pounder on it."

Coggin lures are handmade by world-renowned master craftsmen Steve Coggin. A second-generation lure maker, Steve began his career in 1970 alongside other Hawaiin pioneers Joe Yee and Marlin Parker. Unlike some mass-produced lures of today, no two Coggin lures are the same, each an individual work-of-art, expertly turned and polished with hand-cut mother of pearl (MOP) or abalone shell slabs that emit a natural brilliance and luminosity. Steve considers dichromatic glass the next best substitute, lit by natural light to reflect colour deep into the water column.

The Coggin Tado is Steve's signature lure. "I first started making it during the late '70s and early '80s at a time when most guys were making smaller lures. I gave one to Chip Van Mols a deckhand on Jen Ken Po with Capt. Jerome Judd and they caught a 700-pounder on it." It was Judd that appropriately named the lure Tado, Kona slang for a skipjack over 10 pounds. The big Tado went on to secure its reputation catching a 1,197-pound blue during the 1993 Lahaina Jackpot, holding the spot for the largest tournament fish ever caught for many years running.

After almost 50 years, Steve is one of the most significant influences of lure making. As such, Coggin lures are highly prized and sorted after by collectors, and tournament teams, with numerous wins, countless grander blues, and hundreds of personal bests. With so much lure making history, we are proud to offer a range of marlin lures for New Zealand conditions.
